Demon Days

Realizing I begin a lot of phrases with "maybe" and "so"
as if I don't have the conviction
to set my sentences free on their own

And seeing that life
is one exhausting process
because it's never knowing
what comes
next.
How could you?

And perhaps not knowing
could give us strength
if we wanted it to
but it's more usually
a crutch for weakness,

a soft place for my "maybe"s and "so"s.

  1. Maybe (*smirk) I just look at things differently than you do, but I don't think of "So" as a word showing a lack of conviction. I think of it as word used to show that something follows another. "Maybe" is definitely a word I can see fitting the description you have laid out here. Though I view "maybe" more in the sense of the second stanza. That is: the use of the word reflects the way the world is unknowable (for lack of a better word).
The only other critique I have here is that the first line: "Realizing I begin a lot of phrases with "maybe" and "so"" makes the reader expect that there will be some change in behavior as a result of this realization. I am sure that someone has pointed this out, or that you are more than well aware of this.

On further reflection, it is possible that this is what you intended. Or it could just be my nasty habit of reading poetry and expecting it to be like prose and follow the logic of prose.
